PFAS Reduce Immune Cell Activity, May Harm Immune Function

Chemicals known as per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have recently shown negative effects on immune function, including an ability to reduce the activation of certain immune cells. The most significant impact was on T cells, which are heavily involved in fighting off infections.

PFAS have been used since the 1950s and are commonly found in conventional nonstick coatings, cosmetics, and stain- or water-resistant fabrics. They have previously been linked to other health issues like liver damage, hormone disruption, cancer, and low birth weights.

The most recent study used a mixture of PFAS commonly present in the environment to mimic real-life human exposure. They tested them on human immune cells, demonstrating that immune-modifying effects could occur where “normal” levels of PFAS are present.

Because they are so prevalent, PFAS are difficult to avoid entirely. Key tips for decreasing your exposure include avoiding nonstick cookware, avoiding stain-resistant fabrics, and using a reverse osmosis or activated carbon water filter. (Also, see 7 Key Places Toxic PFAS Hide Out below ↓).

Eating an Early Breakfast Could Help Prevent Type 2 Diabetes

Eating breakfast before 8 a.m. could lower the risk of type 2 diabetes, a new study has found. Overall, this habit was connected with a 59% lower risk for diabetes when compared with eating breakfast after 9 a.m.

"We know that meal timing plays a key role in regulating circadian rhythms and glucose and lipid control,” said Anna Palomar-Cros, a lead study author, “but few studies have investigated the relationship between meal timing or fasting and type 2 diabetes."

The study followed over 100,000 adult participants and included data from dietary records as well as timing of meals. The participants’ health continued to be assessed over an average followup period of 7 years, and new cases of type 2 diabetes were recorded.

Not only did the researchers find that the timing of breakfast seemed to be an important factor, they also found that a late dinner (after 10 p.m.) seemed to increase diabetes risk. They noted that previous research has shown skipping breakfast may raise the risk of diabetes as well.

Fight Pain, Inflammation from Your Living Room

You can make use of natural light therapy to ease pain, lower inflammation, and boost your health in a number of other ways.

Chronic inflammation is now recognized as a leading contributor to chronic diseases, many of them pain-related. While there are several natural ways— including herbs and spices— to reduce inflammation, none is easier than red light therapy. It utilizes safe, red and near-infrared rays to activate mitochondria, supporting your body at the deepest level. Studies have shown it can fight inflammation, ease muscle and joint pain, and even boost mood and energy. This therapy used to be in-office only, but Lumebox has developed a portable red light therapy device you can use in your home (or anywhere). It’s third-party tested for safety and simple to operate.

5 Best Prebiotic Foods for Your Gut

Research indicates that prebiotics are just as important for gut health as probiotics. Basically, they serve as food for the good bacteria in your digestive tract so that these beneficial microbes can thrive and multiply. Many foods that contain indigestible dietary fiber provide some prebiotics, but the top 5 are dandelion greens, Jerusalem artichokes, garlic, leeks, and onions. Asparagus and black-eyed peas didn’t crack the top 5 but still got an “honorable mention.” (More)

Circadian Rhythm Disruption May Increase Cancer Risk

Circadian rhythm refers to your internal biological clock. Among other important functions, it helps inform your body when it’s time to go to sleep and when to wake up. This rhythm seems to be incredibly important for overall health, and some research shows that disrupting it may even increase cancer risk. Shift workers seem to be the most affected because they frequently experience circadian rhythm disruption, but experts worry that blue light exposure at night could cause problems, too. (More)

Rosemary Boosts Your Brain and May Even Combat Hair Loss

Rosemary, which comes from the Latin word meaning “dew of the sea,” is a highly aromatic herb from the mint family. Along with providing a punch of flavor to food, it has shown an ability to boost brain function when used in aromatherapy. At least one study has even found that culinary amounts of rosemary could help slow age-related cognitive decline. As an essential oil, rosemary has also shown potential for regrowing hair, even comparing favorably to a conventional hair loss treatment. (More)

Isometric Exercise May Be Best for Lowering Blood Pressure

Isometric exercise is a type of static strength training, meaning you hold your body in one position for a certain length of time. Some good examples include wall sits, planks, and dead hangs. Surprisingly, a recent meta-analysis found that this specific type of exercise could be the most effective for lowering blood pressure. It came out ahead of dynamic (regular) strength training, aerobic exercise, and HIIT training, though all four did show overall benefits for blood pressure. (More)

6 Top Nutrients for Healthy, Youthful-Looking Skin

You may think of skincare as mostly what you apply to your skin, but your skin also relies on the nutrients you get from food. Antioxidants like vitamin C, flavonoids, and carotenoids are extremely important because they help protect your skin from UV damage. (Plus, vitamin C boosts collagen, an important anti-aging skin protein.) Omega 3s help keep your skin supple and may lower inflammation, while zinc and selenium are key skin-boosting minerals. (More)

Younger-Looking Skin and a Better Mood

Did you know there’s one simple, natural therapy that can reduce the appearance of wrinkles and improve your mood?

Known as red light therapy, this technique activates mitochondria to lower inflammation and boost blood flow. The result is less noticeable wrinkles and scars as well as improved skin texture and elasticity. Using a portable red light device daily has also been shown to increase energy, ease symptoms of depression, fight inflammation, and reduce pain. You can find out more about the benefits of Lumebox light therapy here.
